\nThe implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is a key objective of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations.<\/p>\n

These goals take an integrated approach for future development, combining progress in economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental sustainability. The conference on Engineering and Food Security in Africa focussed on two important UN Sustainable Development Goals \u2013 Goal 2 \u201cZero hunger\u201d and Goal 12 \u201cSustainable consumption and production\u201d,
\nThe event brought together leaders from Africa and industry, government and policy makers, academics and civil society to discuss the important issues relating to food security and sustainable consumption and production.

\nThe conference also addressed the role of engineering in developing new technologies in the agricultural sector, and agricultural policy and engineering to meet the challenges of food security and water shortages.<\/p>\n

There were discussions on capacity building to build human capital and institutional capability, vital for all sectors involved in food production.<\/p>\n

The Tunis Declaration<\/a> on the role of engineers and their commitment to sustainable development for food security was signed on 25 June by all organisers and is the basis of further discussions with policy makers in Africa, including the African Union.<\/p>\n
