The recognition of the Institution of Engineers Mauritius (IEM) Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB)<\/a> as a provisional signatory of the International Engineering Alliance (IEA)<\/a> was celebrated on the national Engineers Day 13 September 2024 by the President of the Republic of Mauritius His Excellency Prithvirajsing Roopun<\/b> and by the Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Education, Tertiary Education Science and Technology the Honourable Mrs. Leela Devi Dookun Luchoomun<\/b>.<\/p>\n

The meetings with the leaders of Mauritius demonstrated that this recognition is a significant moment in the history of engineering in Mauritius. This recognition puts Mauritius on the map, with its engineering education system now moving towards international recognition as being equivalent to the education provided in more than 30 signatories around the world including Australia, the USA, Canada and the UK.

\nEngineers graduating in Mauritius can be proud of the education that they receive. Importantly the quality of engineering work will also be improved. Mauritius will have a higher standards of infrastructure \u2013 schools, roads, hospitals, water and electricity supply and housing and eventually of course a better quality of life for its people.<\/p>\n

The Vice Chancellors and Heads of Departments of Engineering in the public and private universities in Mauritius were also enthusiastic about the acknowledgement of the International Engineering Alliance, and the recognition that this provides to their engineering courses. The recognition will make engineering education attractive and accessible to international students from other parts of Africa and Asia.

\nThe members of the Institution of Engineers Mauritius (IEM) celebrated the achievement on national Engineers Day 13 September 2024 with a gala dinner event. A special edition of the IEM journal was launched, acknowledging the contributions of the many volunteers, educators and assessors, and the mentors from the National Board of Accreditation (India)<\/a> and the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)<\/a>, that supported the project. <\/p>\n

The World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) Committee on Education in Engineering<\/a> and Former WFEO President Dr Marlene Kanga AO<\/a>, who attended the event, were also acknowledged. Dr Kanga congratulated IEM and urged members of the Institution to continue the journey to full signatory status.<\/p>\n
